I would like to educate people a little 🙂 lately I have had a couple of people cancel on me due to there pain and desperation to get better they want to see a doctor rather then someone that has had training and will hopefully get to the root cause of there problems.
OK but what do you really think the doctor are going to actually do for you?
I totally get this sometimes duty calls your in so much pain is so bad and you just want it to stop!. right I understand more then you think after being involved in some car accidents, twisted pelvis, broken bones that’s actually how my business A Healing Touch begun and has been going since 2004.
Now don’t get me wrong either on this blog If you have been involved in major sugary or an accident then I totally agree follow the doctors advice and make sure that massage is suitable for you. However in my practice I would always do a referral if patients had contraindications such as Cancer, an illness that I have never heard of and sometimes GP for sore muscles. I am more on about the ones that have had a sore shoulder for example 2 weeks or just started having the problems and the pain is not going away (even tho gentle massage can help people that have been involved in accidents too but always best to make sure it is not broken initially)
The doctors are going to send you home and disguise the pain with some super strong pain killers if you are lucky such as co codamol which is in turn made up of two cheap pills that you can save through buying cheap paracetamol and codeine your self. (obviously I am not a doctor either please take note) But I would recommend speaking with the pharmacy that is trained in medicine too. most painkillers are meant for short term use and you can get sick from using them to long.
Once again I know this due to my own acid re-flux from what I feel was being on them to long. (this was before what I know what I know now in becoming a massage therapist)- I take Diamaceous earth for acid reflux and not taken omeprazol for years. anyway sorry went of track there brilliant stuff tho.
Back to pain…..
So most doctors will send you home with exercises put you on a huge waiting list for physio which you have to put yourself on the waiting list not like the olden days. You will probably have to wait approx 6 -8 ish weeks to be seen by the physio then wait for a month to be seen for your second session.
My argument on the physio and not saying its not good it is in fact excellent. However you the people in pain can be doing something to help your pain right now, and you may as well get the ball rolling cause guess what they are only going to give you boring exercises to do, that most people won’t do.
so you could be educating your self there are loads of you tube videos how to stretch arm, back, legs whatever your complaints are look them up and start doing them at home NOW. it has to be everyday if you want to start feeling better and it does take time depending on how chronic your pain is.
Rules of any exercises if it hurts then STOP and don’t do them.
If people come to me to get a massage- what will I be doing to help your pain?.
1- I will be watching you as you are walking in, how you sit and looking at your posture. This is before we have even started and you told me the problem.
2- A full consultation will be carried out.
3- you will be asked to undress to underwear or if just want back worked on then trousers(dignity is kept throughout with towels)
4- I use all my techniques that I have learnt since 2004 and am trained in sports massage to relaxation massages and have studied over 16 different treatments and use all of the techniques and oils depending on what your body can handle because everybody is different with there pain thresholds. I listen to the body in what it needs.
5- even if you are having more deep tissue work I still incorporate relaxation like an Indian head massage at the end of your treatment and reiki
6- I will tell you to drink lots of water because it flushes out toxins and also it keeps the muscles and joints lubricated.
7- I will teach you the exercises that you need to be doing, like what the physio and what the doctors will give you.
8- I will teach you how to naturally help your pain with natural acupressure points
9- the use of cold and heat should never be under estimated I usually recommend cold such as picnic ice packs wrapped in a towel and where ever it hurts place the effective area for about 10-15 mins every 2 hours. And heat can be used in between and before you go to bed for as long as you want (If you have circulatory problems then it will be one or the other). Once again if it makes it worse which it shouldn’t then STOP.
10. Depending on your ailment my favorite is Mediterranean oregano oil great oil very good for arthritis/ for pain also biofreeze which most osteopaths recommend this to but personally I use the oregano oil.
11- One thing I like to do is be honest with people for instance if you have a headache then it is usually because you have knots in your shoulder, If you have lower back pain your legs need work on too, if you have chronic pain then sometimes the pain will take a while for it to go down and once you have an injured bone or muscle then it is about maintenance in making sure that further down the line you don’t need more serious things like operations it can help a great deal, and if after 6-10 sessions you do not feel any difference then my treatment would not be working for you and I would suggest referral. But if it is working for you then great keep up the work with me. I have personally spent loads in treatments that have not worked for me. I like to feel that after your first treatment you would feel more flexible or at least 24 hours later.
I always think it is good practice to educate and be honest. I get a lot of people who I will say did you do the exercises I gave you, often they will say NO. but the thing is both massage and exercise go hand in hand and work well together and is also up to the individual to keep them self subtle. I believe sometimes when all else us failed such as the cold and heat packs and massage therapy or osteopaths, the osteopaths/chiropractors work on the bones and I work more with the muscles. if my natural ways have not worked then the doctors are in order.
but before you reach for the pills try massage first. There are always ways to make you feel more comfortable. Some people cant lie on there tummy’s so massage will be done in side lying. either way I am so sure from peoples feed back I don’t know what my massage is like obviously I cant feel what you are feeling. But one thing I am good at is making sure that people are comfortable at all times and I will find a way to adapt to your needs after all it is your treatment and your body and only you can feel what pain is going on inside.
