19th-25th September is World Reflexology Week.

Reflexology is an alternative medical practice involving the application of pressure to specific points on the feet and hands. This is done using thumb, finger, and hand massage techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on a pseudoscientific system of zones and reflex areas that purportedly reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work on the feet and hands causes a physical change to the supposedly related areas of the body.

In the 1890s, British scientists found that nerves connect the skin and internal organs. They also found that the body’s entire nervous system tends to adjust to outside factors, including touch.

A reflexologist’s touch may help to calm the central nervous system, promoting relaxation and other benefits just like any form of massage.

Others believe that the brain creates pain as a subjective experience. Sometimes, the brain reacts to physical pain. But in other cases, it may create pain in response to emotional or mental distress.

Some believe that reflexology can reduce pain through calming touch, which may help to improve someone’s mood and reduce stress.

What happens in a Reflexology appointment?

A typical Reflexology treatment is 30 to 60 minutes long and begins with a quick health history and consultation about your health and lifestyle. The reflexologist will use the information to customize the therapy. We may then ask you to remove your shoes and socks and sit comfortably in a reclining chair or on a massage table. The reflexologist will assess the feet and stimulate various points to identify areas of tenderness or tension. Brisk movements and massage may be used to warm the hands and feet. Finger or thumb pressure is then applied to the foot using reflexology techniques. Lotion or oil may be used, and the reflexologist may also use instruments like balls, brushes, and dowels.

Reflexology is a very relaxing treatment that can also help during pregnancy so if you are waiting for the baby to arrive then this could also help speed things along.

What are the benefits of Reflexology?

  • Helps lessen migraines and headaches
  • Promotes a healthier immune system
  • Help to regulates hormones and relieve PMS
  • Calms the nervous and respiratory system
  • Improves sleep patters
  • Relives stress, depression and anxiety
  • Helps with symptoms of Fibromyalgia, Sciatica, Carpel tunnel syndrome and more.

We are celebrating this special week by offering £5 off all Reflexology appointments taking place at our Horley Treatment Room, between 19th-25th September. All you need to do is quote WTW when you book your treatment to get the special offer price.

You may have heard of Hot Stone Massage before, but do you know what it actually is?

Hot Stone Massage is a popular thermal stone massage - a delightfully relaxing and serene treatment using warm Basalt stones to massage the body from head to toe.

This is a wonderfully warming treatment that works on energy points located throughout the body to rebalance and harmonise. The muscles are relaxed and rejuvenated in a sensation totally unique to this type of massage.

The gentle pressure from the stones, along with the accompanying massage, has the effect of wiping out tension, making you feel like you’re walking on air!

Your massage therapist will place the gently heated stones on energy points throughout the body. The warmth and the weight of the stones will help you to relax during this treatment.

The stones help your massage therapist to use a slightly deeper pressure during the actual massage, giving you greater benefit and helping you feel more relaxed as a result.

What’s the difference between Hot Stone Massage and a normal massage?

Hot Stone Massage differs from other types of massage because it uses smooth, heated stones. Basalt river rocks are usually used, mainly because they are smooth without any jagged edges, and are just the right weight to add the perfect amount of pressure. They are also very effective at heating up and holding their heat for the duration of the treatment.

The focal point of this type of massage is the use of stones to apply pressure during the session to promote relaxation. Regular massages do not use stones to massage the body but instead focus on pressure points and muscles.

What are the benefits of Hot Stone Massage?

It’s really scorching at the moment, especially where we are in the South-East of England. Looking at the weather forecast, this hot weather is set to continue for the next couple of weeks at least!

Lots of us are struggling to keep cool at the moment, so we have pulled together some top tips for keeping cool and safe in hot weather.

If you can, stay indoors. Close curtains in rooms that face the sun (don’t forget this will change throughout the day!) People are often surprised at how much cooler it can be indoors than outdoors.

If you do need to leave the house, avoid being outside in the sun between 11am and 3pm, as this is when UV rays are strongest. Wear plenty of sun screen and a wide-brimmed hat.

Make a home-made air conditioning unit. Freeze a bottle of water and place this in front of a fan. The cold bottle will cool the air from the fan and distribute it around the room. You can also try this with a bowl of ice. However, make sure the fan and bowl are placed on a steady surface so there is no risk of the fan getting wet.

Take a cool bath or shower, which will help lower your body temperature. Going for a swim outdoors can also provide much-welcomed relief, but ensure you follow safety advice if you are going to open water to cool down.

At night, ditch your duvet in favour of a sheet. If you don’t have a flat sheet (as many houses these days don’t!), use an empty duvet cover. And don’t be tempted to sleep naked. Wearing thin clothes to bed will draw the sweat off your

body, keeping you from feeling too sticky.

It goes without saying, but don’t forget to keep well hydrated by drinking lots of fluids. Water is best, but avoid excess alcohol as this can dehydrate you. Make sure you take water with you when you go out.

And remember, excessive heat can be dangerous. Keep an eye on vulnerable people such as those over 75, people who have long term illness, as well as babies and very young children, who will struggle to keep cool and safe. If you or someone else feels unwell with a high temperature, it may be heatstroke or heat exhaustion, so seek medical advice.

Have you ever heard of Lomi Lomi Massage?

If not, you're missing out on a wonderfully relaxing, healing and spiritual experience. People who receive this unique and traditional Hawaiian Massage rave about the healing effects on both mind and body.

What is Lomi Lomi Massage?

Lomi Lomi is a traditional Hawaiian massage that uses a combination of massage techniques, nut oils (Macadamia, palm and coconut), and elements of breathing to restore energy and soothe the body. What is Lomi Lomi Massage

Its principles are that the massage works gently yet deeply into the muscles with continuous, flowing strokes. This allows the recipient to relax and give in to the nurturing touch. It also works from the belief that memories are not just stored in the brain and mind, but also in every cell of the human body. The long, continuous strokes of the massage are designed to help the body let go of its old patterns and behaviours, which can cause as many stresses and strains as muscle tension.

So what can I expect from a Lomi Lomi massage?

Traditionally, we perform this massage with the recipient lying on a hand-woven mat on the floor. However, you may find yourself on a conventional massage table, or lying directly on the vinyl of it. Instead of being covered with towels, you might just have one towel or a small sheet to preserve your modesty. These steps are taken to avoid interrupting the continuous flow of the massage.

The therapist will usually begin the Lomi Lomi healing practice with a period of stillness between therapist and recipient. Sometimes the therapist's hands will rest lightly on the recipient's back.

The therapist will work with your body, with fluid, rhythmic strokes to release and shift tensions. The treatment may be slow and relaxing or faster and more invigorating, depending on how your body responds. You might find that the therapist massages two different parts of your body simultaneously. This is to stop your brain from focusing on any one area and therefore helps to aid relaxation.  They may make full-body or under-body strokes, lightly stretch your limbs and carefully rotate your joints. These techniques are thought to free up your energy flow, and they will be performed very gently, staying within your comfort zone and level of resistance.

Sounds wonderful, doesn't it! So go on, relax and enjoy with a Lomi Lomi Massage - Book Now!

Please note that Lomi Lomi Massage is only available to females.
