WHAT IS DEEP TISSUE FOR?
Unlike classic massage therapy, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problems such as:

  • Chronic pain
  • Limited mobility
  • Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury)
  • Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Postural problems
  • Ostearthritis pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Muscle tension or spasm

BENEFITS OF DEEP TISSUE

  • Stimulate Blood and Lymph flow thereby increasing the supply of Oxygen and Glucose, removes Toxins,Carbon Dioxide and Lactic Acid.
  • Loosens the Subcutaneous Tissue and Fascia of Muscles, increasing Tissue Pliability .
  • Reduces swelling, bruising and pain after injury.
  • Speeds up the healing process.
  • Breaks down and reduces adhesions between injury or unhealthy muscle fibres.
  • Increases the range of movements in the joints.
  • Reduces Stress on other muscle groups in the body that may over compensate for an injured area.
  • Stretches specific localised area of tissue. Improves movement.
  • Affects the Nervous System by stimulating the nerve receptors in the Tissues, controls tissue tension and reduces pain.
  • Can help people that suffer from different types of Arthritis.
  • Frozen shoulder,tennis, elbow.
  • Relief tension and stress from the body.

MUSCLE SKELETAL IMBALANCES

  • Increased strain on muscles, tendons, ligaments and bone
  • Changes in soft tissue development
  • Changes in skeleton development (Chronic imbalances)
  • Reduced flexibility and range of motion
  • Muscles wasting atrophy
  • Changes in emotion
  • Changes in posture
  • Reduced performance

 BENEFITS OF STRETCHING

  • Always stretch before exercise and after.
  • The standard 3 x 30 seconds is the basis for stretching, if the muscle is to be stretched more specifically, then the stretch can be held for longer up to two minutes.
  • Muscular relaxation
  • Mental relaxation
  • Increased flexibility
  • Improved range of movement
  • Relief of muscle soreness
  • Injury prevention and management

CHARACTERISTICS OF TRIGGER POINTS

  • Painful on compression
  • Located within taut band of muscle
  • Frequently produce an autonomic response
  • Often mobilising muscle with active trigger points will be shortened i.e. loss of functional range
  • Muscle that contain trigger points will often hurt when contracted.
  • Points become self-perpetuation I.e. pain increases and will not go away unless treated

HOW DOES DEEP TISSUE WORK?
It works because it hits the main target areas that create pain and discomfort. Neuromuscular techniques are used to help stretch out the muscles. Trigger points are used to hit the main pain pressure and source of pain. Deep tissue massage is used by working on a deeper level and by going deeper into the muscles rather then on the surface layer of the muscles like in some other treatments.
It brings the blood to the surface which is needed especially when it has been restricted for a long period of time.
This treatment has very effective results.
Deep tissue massage is effective for those that have had long term chronic problems or prefer a deeper massage in general. Some acute back problems can become a huge problem and can cost more money in the future if left untreated.
Worse case scenario failure to deal with scar tissue damage would lead to possibly no use in the muscle at all. If you don't deal with a problem that was once an acute one it will become a chronic one and it may result in future operations to rectify it. The body being in pain is its own mechanism of requiring some attention before you lose all of the use in the muscle. Never leave the odd twinge of pain left untreated.
I work closely with chiropractor, osteopaths, as it can help relive pain due to the surrounding muscles being constricted from subluxation (Meaning a slight dislocation that is misaligned and what requires adjustment). Deep tissue assists in correcting problem areas and imbalances of the soft tissues from the muscle fibres caused by repetitive physical activity and trauma.

Soft tissue damages and prevents the blood flowing which then cuts off the circulation, starving the muscles of oxygen which then lacks in nutrients which is vital for the body's natural healing abilitys.
Muscles need glucose and oxygen and without this muscles will become weaker, unhealthy, lose there mobility and flexibility.
Making the muscle fibres shorter which eventually start pulling on the surrounding tendons causing tension and they become inflammed and there fore the muscles fail to relax which then results in spasms and pain in areas of the body.
The muscles cannot work effectively through there range of motion if a muscle is damaged and scarred.
Untreated scar tissue is the major cause of re-injury, usually months after you thought that the injury had been fully healed and thats why even if you are not in pain it is good to have regular massage to prevent this from happening.

Getting rid of the Scar Tissue
To remove any unwanted scar tissue it is vital that you start a course in deep tissue or sports massage. Whiles anti-inflammatory drugs or using ultrasound, cold or heat will help the injured area they will not remove any of  the scar tissue that is present . Only massage can do that.

Scar tissue is made from a very tough, inflexible fibrous material. This fibrous material binds itself to the damaged soft tissue fibers in an effort to draw the damaged fibers back together. What results is a bulky mass of fibrous scar tissue completely surrounding the injury site. In some cases it's even possible to see and feel this bulky mass under the skin, known as knots.  When scar tissue forms around an injury site, it is never as strong as the tissue it replaces. It also has a tendency to contract and deform the surrounding tissues, so not only is the strength of the tissue diminished but flexibility of the tissues is also compromised. Firstly, it means a shortening of the soft tissues which results in a loss of flexibility. Secondly, it means a weak spot has formed within the soft tissues, which could easily result in further damage.

Lastly the formation of scar tissue will result in loss of strength and power. For a muscle to attain full power it must be fully stretched before contraction. Both the shortening effects and weakening of the tissues means that a full stretch and optimum contraction is not no longer possible.

This massage should be noted that it is not a relaxing massage. But after having one you would notice the difference in your stress levels as deep tissue releases all this.

Some knots can be painful, care is taken to ensure it is comfortable and never too painful for you to handle either. Your therapist will stretch your muscles for you and push on acupressure points to allow the blood to flow freely through the chi in the body.

After the 1st session your movement and mobility is more free.

AFTER CARE
Clients may experience slight discomfort and feel a little bit sore in the next 72 hours you are advised to use a cold pack to take down inflammation. You possibly may feel a little light headed after this treatment which usually lasts no longer then a minute or two. Please ensure you are fully back into reality before driving. It is recommended that you don't have another treatment for 48 hours, as the muscles need time to relax which therefore allows your body to recover and speed up the healing process.
As always drink plenty of water.
A light diet is suggested.
Avoid alcohol.
Always place a cold compress on the areas where your therapist has worked to reduce swelling and inflammation from the treated area within 1 hour.
After a deep massage sometimes it is pain free other times you may experience pain within a 24-72 hour period, this is the body's way of adjusting itself. A cold compress should be put on affected area.
Always stretch when ever you can and follow your therapists recommendations in doing stretching exercises correctly which would have been given with your after care advice.
